Seriously a great tactic. Remove the focus from the corruption charges (and promiscuity allegations) by invoking the dangers to his family. Although these dangers are disquieting, I'm not so certain a State of the City address is the appropriate place. Perhaps in a separate press conference he could better address these types of issues..."let justice be done"..."private matter" etc could all be defenses. But from a tactical standpoint, taking umbrage at press treatment and asserting racially motivated threats and slurs, whether true or not, really tends to warn the media to either back off or refocus. This tactic was discussed in a recent negotions CLE I attended...maximizing your leverage and deflating the opposition through refocusing of the argument. It has been a Hillary tactic all along. Obama has not been as good at this tactic (could be seen as being dodgy or Clintonesque), and has been largely on the defensive. Obama salvo has been Hillary's own statements (Bosnia, Ireland peace talks, her records as First Lady), not any tactical maneuvering by Obama. The only thing I've seen from Obama is the call to have Hillary release her tax records...which I can only assume is to have people scratching their heads and demanding to know how the Clintons amassed such a fortune so quickly (Bill...you are going to have some explaining to do on some Middle East brokering going on...conflict of interest anyone? Halliburton all over again?).
